What is the purpose of fenders when docking a boat?

To absorb impact and prevent damage to the hull and to adjacent vessels

Fenders act as cushions between your boat and the dock or another vessel. They absorb shock during docking, so the hull and nearby boats don’t get dents or scrapes. By providing a buffer, they spread the contact force over a larger area and protect the dock’s surface as well. Place them on the sides where contact is likely and keep them inflated to the recommended pressure. They’re not meant to increase speed, measure distance, or anchor the boat.
